Business Ethics and Christianity

Some of you already know this, but many of you may be wondering why I have been missing in action for the past little bit. Short story, I am six classes short of graduating with my Bachelor’s Degree in Organizational Leadership. One of the required classes for graduation is Business Ethics and it is rarely available for me to take in a normal semester. So…I bit the bullet and I’m taking it as a summer class. Summer classes suck for a variety of reasons when you are trying to work full time, be a mom and run a business. It is absolutely exhausting to cram a full semester worth of work and learning into six weeks, but I am certain that in the end it will be worth it.

I had an exam this week and it was an essay question form of exam in which we had to conduct an ethical analysis. I will spare you the details as exciting as they are. LOL. However, in conversation about it, a friend made a comment that I found incredibly thought provoking and disagreeable. He said to me, “it is important not to confuse your Christianity with ethics.” DISAGREE. We have all heard in the news of big, ethical scandals in the corporate world. I believe that individuals with solid ethics are the basis of a healthy corporate culture. The principles of Christianity that I hold dear to my heart are not constraints that I should push under the rug in a corporate setting, but guidewires that hold me steady in all settings. Having solid principles as a basis that are grounded deep in my character help me to make solid decisions regardless of the level of stress that I may be under. I am grateful that I have principles as a part of who I am that help me determine what to make priority.

That priority in my life and in my business is people. People and relationships are precious and they are ultimately what makes life worth remembering after we have retired from the corporate world. They are why I work so hard and do what I do. The relationships, the smiles, the growth. That’s what Four Summers is all about. My Christian principles are the basis of my business ethics.
